Military academics trained men to be officers and gentlemen, stern commanders and fierce warriors. But there were no textbooks or tactics manuals for the battlefield of the heart, and young men who knew how to flank a position or lay siege to a city found themselves helplessly negotiating terms of surrender to a gentler foe.

The women knew even less about preparing for the months apart or the intimate horror upon hearing of a great battle and waiting for the next letter. For he had been trained to be brave; she would need to learn to be, soon enough.
